Lenny,

An excellent resource I recently received from you that I recommend to other educators is the Teaching Tolerance publication. A lot of cool lessons geared toward Martin Luther King Jr. and the state of our nation now--as in how far we're really come? It goes beyond the traditional "black history month" lesson, and gives tons of cool ideas for teachers' lesson planning. A good resource i plan to use when starting the school year next time is the school climate inventory, forcing kids to evaluate what type of environment their school provides to its children. I am constantly stressing to kids that although we try to lead by example, it's also their responsibility to ensure the school climate is tolerant. They must overpower their negative classmates and find peaceful ways to stand up for peers without a voice. It's a tough job, but we cannot all just complain about the state of our schools. If we want to rid intolerance of race, sexual orientation, social class, etc., it's up to us as teachers and administrators to lead by example and do our best to inspire and motivate the majority of the student body to do the same.
